Give Your Business a New Name in 5 Easy Steps

Have you ever come up with the perfect business name, only to discover it is already taken? You're not the only one. Whether your business has outgrown its name or you’re starting a new endeavor, choosing a business name is hard. Today, I'm sharing the 5 steps I use with my clients to help brainstorm their business name.

5 Easy Steps to Give Your Business a New Name

Step 1: Business Interview

To interview your business, you need to imagine your ideal customer. Ask them what problem your business can help them with. How do they feel when shopping with you?

Where else do they like to shop? Why do they choose to buy from you over other businesses in your niche?

Use these answers to define your business values and mission.

Step 2: Business Name Concepts

Next, brainstorm a list of names for your business and narrow it down to your top 10 favorites.

Keep in mind, brands with 3 words or less are easier to remember and if you can get it down to 2 syllables that is even better.

Looking at your list, what names fit your business and why? Also, which names do not fit your business and why? This will help sharpen the focus of your business identity. Toss out the names that don’t work and expand on the list of ones that do.

Create a new list of up to 6 business names, including the ones that worked above. Write short stories about what inspired each name. What names really resonate with your business goals?

Step 3: Research Availability

Use search engines, social media, and domain hosts to see if there are any existing businesses with the same names on your list. Mark the available social handles and domains next to each name you don't find already in use. Now you should have a list of names you really like and are available.

Step 4: Say, Write, Repeat.

Try out each of your Top 3 available business names. Say them aloud. Write them down. And repeat the process.

You want a business name that your clients will remember, connect with, and will match your business goals. When you're 100% certain, decide on your new business name!

Step 5: Take Action

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect new name for your business, it’s time to take action. Domain names go fast! As soon as your business name is chosen, buy your domain and register the name on all the social media platforms you may end up using.

Your answers will define your dream client and the unique points of your business that set you apart from your competitors. Then the brainstorming can begin!

I'll create a list of business names for you based on your business interview. Each one will include available domain names, and a short description of the inspiration behind each name. Together, we will narrow down the list until you pick the perfect business name.

Once you've chosen your name, I'll walk you through claiming your domain name and social media accounts. If you have renamed your business, I will help you transition your new business to your current audience so they understand your re-brand.

Then... We can begin your branding design! A logo for your new business name is a must! It’s the first step of your brand identity.
